HYBRID EVENT: Zoom & Iwan Ries Lounge
Tuesday, November 23, 2021
5:30-7:00 pm CDT

Operation Halyard, with Col. John
                              Capello

One of the best-kept secrets for many decades, the Halyard Mission remains to this day the largest rescue mission of airmen from behind enemy lines in U.S. military history. The mission conducted by the Office of Strategic Services in 1944 remained classified for over fifty years due to global geopolitical struggles. The Halyard Mission Foundation has been working for years to shine light on this important story of sacrifice and courage, which is finally accessible to the public. From August to December 1944, with the assistance of the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland, approximately 500 airmen were transported via improvised runways in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to U.S. airbases in Italy. This discussion will describe the mission and the and the role Serbs played in its success.

John Cappello
Lt. Col. John Cappello retired from the United States Air Force (USAF) in 2015 after over 24 years.  He served as the USAF Attaché to Serbia and Israel. He is a Command Pilot having accumulated over 3,000 flying hours. He founded the Halyard Mission Foundation in 2015 after leaving government service as a way to commemorate, educate, and increase awareness of the Halyard Mission, the rescue of over 500 US airmen during WWII, and the role the Serbs played in the success of the mission.

This will be a hybrid Zoom and in-person event in which participants will be able to join us in person at the Lounge at Iwan Ries (19 S. Wabash, 2d floor), or through Zoom from anywhere else in the world. The Cigar Society has hosted 15 years of in-person events, and during the pandemic we hosted nearly 50 online events through Zoom video conferencing. This is our first attempt at a hybrid event and there are still some kinks to be worked out, but we want to allow our vaccinated members to be able to attend in person if they please, and also to accommodate those are simply staying home and those who are among our far-flung remote members.

Respond to me by email at curtis.tuckey@logicophilosophicus if you are interested in attending. Tell me which mode you prefer (in-person or Zoom). I will respond to you with registration information. Please respond as quickly as possible with your interest so I can complete our logistical plan. (For example, which room and which audio/video equipment we use at Iwan Ries will depend on how many in-person participants we expect.)

About the Cigar Society of Chicago

ONE OF THE OLDEST AND greatest traditions of the city clubs of Chicago is the discussion of intellectual, social, legal, artistic, historical, scientific, musical, theatrical, and philosophical issues in the company of educated, bright, and appropriately provocative individuals, all under the beneficent influence of substantial amounts of tobacco and spirits.  The Cigar Society of Chicago embraces this tradition and extends it with its Informal Smokers, University Series lectures, and Cigar Society Dinners, in which cigars, and from time to time pipes and cigarettes, appear as an important component of our version of the classical symposium.  To be included in the Cigar Society's mailing list, write to the secretary at curtis.tuckey@logicophilosophicus.org
