Is Chicago
the Silicon Valley of Cannabis?
|
|
Medical use of marijuana
became legal in Illinois in 2013.
Recreational use by adults became legal
starting January 1, 2020. In this first year
of legalization—just last year—Illinois
saw $1B in sales and $100MM in state and
local tax revenue. This is a pattern
that many states want to emulate, and, as of
today, 36 states have legalized cannabis use
at some level. The main driver for this
legislation is tax revenue.
Wait, there's more: Chicago, it
turns out, is home a very large number of
publicly traded multi-state cannabis
operators, or MSOs. Chicago-based MSOs
have a collective market capitalization of
tens of billions of dollars, with a high
growth rate.
How did we get here? How could it have
happened so quickly? Why is there so much
activity here in Chicago?
To get an overview of the cannabis industry,
find out answers to these questions, and
engage in what we predict will be a vibrant
and informative Q&A session, Bryan
Whitehead, executive director of the
Cigar Society and proprietor of The
Flowershop, LLC, has invited two well
regarded Chicago businessmen and cannabis
journalists.
Mike Fourcher and Brad Spirrison
are publishers of a closely watched industry
newsletter, Grown In. Mike and
Brad have been on the front lines of this
explosively growing industry from the
beginning, specifically focusing on the
Midwest market of Illinois, Missouri. and
Michigan. They know the players, they
understand the broader strategies, and they
have observed the complexities and gyrations
of state regulatory agencies as these
agencies try to stay ahead of the growth
curve.
Join us for a fascinating discussion of this
nascent industry, and industry that now
employs more workers than does the Coal
Industry.
Ladies
and gentlemen, you may smoke!

About the
Cigar Society of Chicago
ONE OF THE OLDEST
AND greatest traditions of the
city clubs of Chicago is the
discussion of intellectual,
social, legal, artistic,
historical, scientific, musical,
theatrical, and philosophical
issues in the company of
educated, bright, and
appropriately provocative
individuals, all under the
beneficent influence of
substantial amounts of tobacco
and spirits. The
Cigar Society of Chicago
embraces this tradition and
extends it with its Informal
Smokers, University
Series lectures, and Cigar
Society Dinners, in which
cigars, and from time to time
pipes and cigarettes, appear as
an important component of our
version of the classical
symposium. To be included
in the Cigar Society's mailing
list, write to the secretary at
curtis.tuckey@logicophilosophicus.org
