APRIL FOOLS!

What's in a joke? What makes jokes funny (or not)? Where do they come from and how are they made? On April Fool's Day, Ted Cohen, an expert in esthetic theory and professor of philosophy at the University of Chicago, will address the Cigar Society on Jokes. Along with actually telling some jokes, Dr. Cohen will touch on his theories of conditional and asymmetrical jokes, the acceptance of absurdity, and matters of taste, morality, and propriety. $30 includes premium open bar, light hors d'oeuvre, and special cigars. We will be meeting privately in the smoking lounge at Iwan Ries. RSVP to tuckey@post.com.

  CUBAWhat's next?

Pulitzer-prize winning Chicago journalist, novelist, and poet Achy Obejas will join the Cigar Society on April 29 to smoke a cigar or two and lead a discussion on the future of Cuba. Achy Obejas was born in Havana in 1956 and emigrated to the United States at the age of six. Since then she has received the Studs Terkel Journalism Prize, several Peter Lisagor journalism honors, two Lambda Literary awards, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in poetry, and residencies at Yaddo, Ragdale and the Virginia Center for the Arts. She is currently Sor Juana Visiting Writer at DePaul University. $30 includes premium open bar, light hors d'oeuvre, and special cigars. We will be meeting privately in the Lounge at Iwan Ries. RSVP to tuckey@post.com.

In 2008 the University Club Cigar Society will be meeting privately two Tuesdays a month from 5:30 to 8:30 PM in the new smoking lounge in the Iwan Ries Building, just around the corner from the University Club, at 19 South Wabash.  Events in the University Series include cocktails at 5:30pm, a lecture or reading starting at 6:00 sharp for about thirty minutes, with discussion and more cocktails to follow.  Smoking is permitted and encouraged at all times, and the topic of conversation will wander.  All members of the University Club and Tower Club are invited, and guests of members are always welcome.  Reservations are required.  Jacket and tie recommended.  If you are interested in becoming a member of the University Club Cigar Society and want to be included in our mailing list, write to the Secretary, Curtis Tuckey, at tuckey@post.com.
